The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated two suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officers regarding the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. The officers questioned were Abhishek Gupta, the former deputy commissioner of North Division, and Indira Mukherjee, the former deputy commissioner of Central Division. CBI officials did not disclose the specific questions asked during the interrogation.
The CBI also summoned the suspended former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal for questioning in the same case. Following his appointment as the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari suspended these three IPS officers and ordered a reinvestigation into the R.G. Kar case. Adhikari initiated a departmental inquiry against the officers and mentioned a potential review of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s involvement in the matter.
The incident dates back to August 9, 2024, when the body of a junior lady doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital was found within the hospital premises. Initially investigated by the Kolkata Police, the case drew attention to the suspended IPS officers. Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation as per the Calcutta High Court’s directive. While Sanjay Roy was identified as the primary suspect by both the police and the CBI, the central agency is exploring the possibility of a broader conspiracy behind the crime.
