Self-enumeration for Census 2027 has started in Meghalaya, signaling a significant step in India’s first fully digital Census. This marks the 16th Census and the 8th since Independence, with around 9,000 enumerators and supervisors deployed across the state for accurate data collection. The administrative boundaries of Meghalaya have been fixed as of December 31, 2025, exclusively for Census purposes.
Highlighting a key feature of this Census, officials mentioned that the entire process, from enumeration to data analysis, will be conducted digitally using mobile applications and the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal. Citizens can participate in self-enumeration online from May 1 to May 15, enhancing transparency and public involvement. Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases, starting with Self-Enumeration and House Listing Operations (HLO), followed by the Population Enumeration phase in February 2027.
The Census will be carried out under the legal framework of the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990, ensuring data quality and timely results publication. Data collection will be done using dedicated mobile apps, supervised through the CMMS portal, with stringent data security measures in place. A national toll-free helpline, 1855, has been launched to assist citizens with queries and guidance for Census 2027.
