A central force jawan, Kanak Koch, serving on election duty, passed away under mysterious circumstances in Falta, South 24 Parganas district. Kanak, a constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, was on polling duty in the Dostipur area of Falta police station when the incident occurred. Accommodated at Dostipur High School along with 86 other jawans, Kanak was found lying unconscious on the balcony late at night by a fellow jawan.
Doctors pronounced Kanak dead upon his arrival at Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital. The authorities suspect that he may have fallen down the stairs, pending confirmation from the autopsy report. An investigation into the matter has been initiated by the police to ascertain the exact cause of his death. Family members of the deceased have been notified of the tragic incident.
Polling for the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal is scheduled in two phases on April 23 and 29, with Diamond Harbour going to the polls in the second phase. Vote counting is set for May 4.
