Central forces deployed in Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata used a baton charge to disperse agitated Trinamool Congress activists amidst the electoral battle between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. The Trinamool workers were protesting and shouting slogans against Adhikari near the Chief Minister’s official residence in Kalighat.
As Adhikari arrived at Jai Hind Bhavan in Kalighat, Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Kajori Banerjee, the party’s councillor and the Chief Minister’s sister-in-law, staged a protest. They surrounded Adhikari, chanting “Jai Bangla” and “Thief” slogans, with some even moving aggressively towards him and his associates. In response, Adhikari and his associates shouted “Jai Shri Ram” and “Hindu-Hindu Bhai Bhai” slogans, leading to increased tension and prompting the central forces to intervene with a baton charge to disperse the agitated activists.
The situation escalated further as Adhikari claimed that such behavior would only boost his polling margin in the gentlemanly atmosphere of Bhabanipur. He expressed confidence in victory, especially if the polling percentage exceeds 80% or even 90%. Meanwhile, Kajori Bandopadhyay refuted Adhikari’s accusations, stating that he had instigated the peaceful polling process.
