The Central Government has announced the initiation of specific provisions of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, effective from January 1, 2026. This law will regulate the operations of national sports federations in the country. The Act, numbered 25 of 2025, was officially published on August 18, 2025, and its enforcement date was set by the Central Government.
In compliance with the Act’s stipulations, the Central Government has designated January 1, 2026, as the commencement date for various sections and subsections. These include provisions concerning the structure and management of National Sports Bodies like the National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee. Additionally, regulations pertaining to the National Sports Board, compliance standards for recognized sports organizations, and the establishment of the National Sports Tribunal will also take effect from the same date.
The phased implementation of the Act is designed to facilitate a seamless transition to the statutory sports governance framework. It aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct in sports administration, ensuring athlete welfare and prompt resolution of sports-related disputes. Aligned with international standards and charters, the Act emphasizes good governance practices in sports.
Starting January 1, 2026, the operationalization of the institutional mechanisms outlined in the Act will begin.
