The Women’s Reservation Bill was presented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal during a special session of Parliament. This move included the proposed Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026, aiming to implement one-third reservation for women in legislative bodies.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, during the parliamentary proceedings, expanding the legislative agenda for the day. The introduction of these bills sparked strong opposition reactions, with Congress MP K. C. Venugopal expressing objections to all three legislations in the House.
Congress MP Venugopal accused the government of attempting to seize control of the Constitution. In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that the bills were merely introduced, with discussions yet to follow. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla assured adequate time for debate during the proceedings.
