The Centre informed the Supreme Court that Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk, detained under the National Security Act, is in good health and cannot be released due to medical reasons. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, stated that Wangchuk’s health has been regularly monitored, with no alarming issues necessitating his release. Mehta emphasized that releasing Wangchuk on health grounds is not feasible or advisable, considering his well-being.

Opposing any relaxation based on health concerns, Mehta asserted, “We have examined his health 24 times. He is fit and undergoing treatment for minor digestive problems. There is no cause for concern or alarm. Exceptions cannot be made in this case.” These statements were made during a hearing on a petition challenging Wangchuk’s detention under the NSA by Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, who deemed it illegal and violative of his rights.

The Supreme Court had earlier urged the government to reconsider Wangchuk’s continued detention, noting his health issues and age. Wangchuk has been in custody since September 26, 2025. The court suggested a review of the necessity of his detention. In a recent development, the court emphasized the importance of the matter, refusing further delays and scheduling a hearing for Wednesday afternoon.
