West London club Chelsea has finalized the acquisition of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Serie A side Atalanta. Palestra, aged 21, has committed to a contract with Chelsea until 2033. This signing marks one of the initial key moves made under the guidance of new head coach Xabi Alonso, who assumed leadership of the team for the 2026-27 season after Enzo Maresca’s departure.
Palestra’s transfer follows a remarkable 2025-26 season where he earned the title of Serie A Defender of the Year during a successful loan stint at Cagliari. Known for his versatility, Palestra showcased his skills in 37 league games, demonstrating proficiency on both flanks as a full-back and wing-back.
The young defender’s impressive performances led to his debut senior call-up for Italy earlier this year, with Palestra already boasting two appearances for the national team. Expressing his excitement post-transfer, Palestra cited Chelsea’s global stature and Alonso’s vision as pivotal factors that influenced his decision to join the club.
“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world. I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager,” Palestra remarked in an official statement. The defender also highlighted the talented squad at Chelsea, emphasizing the strong team dynamics and Alonso’s strategic plans for the upcoming season.
Chelsea aims to progress from the previous season under Alonso’s leadership, as the club embarks on a new chapter striving to regain its competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.
