Chennai Corporation Expands Community Dog Feeding Locations

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has increased its designated community dog feeding areas from eight to 40 across all 15 city zones. This expansion follows Supreme Court directives to regulate community dog feeding in urban areas. The new locations are spread throughout the city, with multiple feeding points in several zones.

Areas like Royapuram, Kolathur, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, and others are now part of the expanded feeding network. Initially, the Corporation identified eight feeding spots in December 2025, aiming to establish at least two spots in each administrative zone. Despite the rise in authorized sites, infrastructure development is still in the early stages.

Signboards marking the feeding locations are limited, and there are no shelters or covered structures at the sites for organized feeding or protection during adverse weather. The GCC is yet to finalize a standard operating procedure for these zones, leading to challenges in public awareness and implementation.

Officials are planning to identify more feeding locations in the future and prioritize installing signboards at all approved sites. Discussions are ongoing to create detailed operational guidelines and potentially construct covered shelters for better cleanliness and maintenance. The Corporation advises animal feeders to maintain hygiene at these spots and ensure no food waste is left behind.

Some residents have expressed concerns about the initiative’s impact on neighborhoods, urging the Corporation to enhance monitoring and provide better infrastructure. They believe that advising feeders to keep areas clean is insufficient in addressing waste management and public sanitation issues.
