The Greater Chennai Corporation has prolonged its special property tax collection campaign until July 31 as almost half of the city’s property owners have not paid their dues for the current assessment period. Out of the 14.23 lakh assessed properties in Chennai, only 6.98 lakh owners have settled their property tax, leaving 7.25 lakh property owners with pending payments. To address this, the corporation is intensifying its collection efforts over the next two weeks.
The special collection camps, which started on July 3 and were initially set to end on July 17, will now continue until the end of July due to the significant number of outstanding payments and the necessity to enhance revenue collection. This extended campaign will operate across all 15 zones of the city through dedicated tax collection camps.
Officials have directed corporation staff to increase awareness initiatives and motivate residents to clear their dues before the deadline to avoid incurring penal interest. Property tax serves as a crucial revenue source for the Greater Chennai Corporation, contributing approximately Rs 1,800 crore annually. These collections are vital for funding various public services and infrastructure projects in the city.
