Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad commended his team’s resilience despite a five-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026. The defeat dimmed CSK’s playoff prospects, while Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a playoff spot by successfully chasing down 181 runs with six balls to spare.
Gaikwad, speaking post-match, acknowledged his team’s competitive spirit throughout the chase and praised the players for their determination despite the absence of key team members. He described it as a good game of cricket and highlighted the missed opportunities that could have made a difference in the outcome.
In their innings, Chennai Super Kings posted 180/7 in 20 overs, with Dewald Brevis top-scoring at 44 runs. Sanju Samson’s quick 27 and contributions from Kartik Sharma and Shivam Dube also bolstered the total. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad comfortably achieved the target, led by Ishan Kishan’s 70 and Heinrich Klaasen’s aggressive 47.
Despite the loss, Gaikwad expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing the challenges they overcame this season. He lauded Sanju Samson’s consistent displays and the unwavering support from Chennai fans. Gaikwad also noted the team’s improvement compared to the previous season and expressed gratitude for the fans’ loyalty.
Chennai Super Kings currently hold the sixth position in the points table with 12 points from 13 matches. Their final group stage match is against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 21 May.
