In a unique move to simplify voter movement and reduce confusion, all 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai will have color-coded polling locations for the upcoming elections. This initiative aims to enhance navigation at large polling centers with multiple booths. District Election Officer J. Kumaragurubaran announced that the color-coding system will be implemented in locations housing more than ten booths to guide voters efficiently to their designated booths, minimizing delays and uncertainties.
Chennai, known for its significant urban electorate, has 4,085 polling booths across 1,197 locations. Many of these locations, especially schools and public institutions, host numerous booths under one roof, leading to congestion and navigation challenges for voters. The new system will assign different colors to specific booths within a location. For example, at Nammalwarpet Chennai High School in Purasawalkam, footpaths have been painted in various shades like sky blue, pink, and pistachio green to direct voters to different blocks, complemented by strategically placed signboards.
To manage high-density polling centers effectively, officials have implemented similar color-coded arrangements in other constituencies. In Perambur’s private school, two separate entry points and a single exit have been established to streamline voter flow. Maps have also guide voters to their booths swiftly. The election machinery is ensuring inclusivity by providing special arrangements for Persons with Disabilities for easy access within polling stations. Moreover, dedicated racks will be available at selected locations for voters to safely store their mobile phones before entering the booths.
Officials are optimistic that the success of the color-coding system could lead to its extension to polling locations with more than five booths in the future, further enhancing voter convenience in the city.
