The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session turned intense as Congress MLA Sangeeta Sinha expressed concerns about the increasing crimes against women and children in the state. Sinha demanded data on rape, molestation, assault, and murder cases registered at police stations from January 2023 to June 2026. Home Minister Vijay Sharma stated a decrease in such cases under the current government compared to the previous administration.
Sinha countered the minister’s claim with detailed district-wise and year-wise data, highlighting specific numbers of molestation cases in different years. She also raised alarm over the rising trend of child abduction cases, predicting a significant increase by the year-end. The Home Minister outlined various measures taken by the government to enhance women’s safety, including the operation of women-exclusive police stations, Special Juvenile Police Units, and awareness campaigns in educational institutions.
Despite these efforts, the minister admitted that there hasn’t been a noticeable reduction in sexual offenses. The session also revealed concerning data on custodial deaths, with 375 deaths reported in jails between 2021 and June 25, 2026. Magisterial inquiries were initiated in most cases, with pending reports in some instances. The period also witnessed a surge in kidnapping cases, particularly in Raipur, along with varying trends in murder and robbery cases across major districts.
