The Chhattisgarh government has implemented the police commissionerate system in Raipur city to enhance law and order. Effective from January 23, 2026, this decision aims to address urban growth, crime rates, traffic congestion, and population demands. The new system will offer increased autonomy and efficiency in policing, ensuring quicker responses to law enforcement situations and better crime control.
The police commissioner will oversee 21 urban police stations in Raipur, including key stations like Civil Lines, Kotwali, Devendra Nagar, and others. Endowed with magisterial powers, the commissioner can enforce Section 144, manage permissions for events, regulate arms licenses, and make prompt decisions during emergencies. This authority extends to laws such as the Chhattisgarh Police Act, Arms Act, Indian Penal Code, and more, enhancing operational effectiveness.
While the commissionerate system covers urban areas, rural parts of Raipur district will remain under the existing police district setup. This reform aligns with Raipur’s urban growth needs and mirrors successful implementations in other Indian cities facing similar policing challenges. The move signifies a significant administrative change in Raipur, focusing on bolstering urban security and governance in the state capital.
