Veteran Congress leader P. Chidambaram criticized the BJP for trying to win over the DMK and NCP-SP to pass the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill, which failed in the Lok Sabha in April. Chidambaram alleged that the BJP aims to reintroduce the bill during the upcoming Monsoon session.
The proposed bill sought to reserve one-third of Lok Sabha and State Assembly seats for women but was seen by Chidambaram as a ploy for constituency delimitation and gerrymandering. He emphasized that the Constitution already provides for women’s reservation, making a new bill unnecessary.
Accusing the BJP of pursuing alliances with NCP-SP and DMK after the Trinamool split, Chidambaram warned against supporting the revised bill. DMK clarified they won’t back the BJP, while BJP leaders criticized Chidambaram’s stance and urged Congress to focus on its credibility.
