Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the 2nd National Conference of Counsels to enhance the Election Commission of India’s legal framework and strategy. The conference, themed “A Year of Legal Challenges, Experiences, Learnings and the Way Forward,” facilitated discussions between the Commission and legal professionals from different parts of the country. Advocates representing the Commission in the Supreme Court and various High Courts, as well as the Commission’s CEOs and senior officials, attended the event.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of fair electoral rolls for ensuring fair elections, stating, “Fair rolls lead to fair polls. That’s the moment today, and India is in it.” He praised the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for their crucial role in electoral roll management and commended the voters in the recent Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal for their significant participation.
Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu mentioned that the conference aimed to enhance coordination between the ECI and its legal representatives nationwide. Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi highlighted the conference as a platform for sharing experiences and addressing emerging legal challenges to strengthen electoral integrity in a dynamic electoral landscape. Interactive sessions during the conference covered key electoral processes like electoral roll management, Special Intensive Revision (SIR), polling and counting procedures, and EVM demonstrations.
The conference also featured experience-sharing sessions by advocates, focusing on election laws, judicial proceedings, legal reforms, institutional coordination, media narratives, and ECI’s technology-driven initiatives such as ECINET. It served as a forum to discuss evolving issues in the electoral and legal domains, building on the progress made since the previous National Conference of ECI Counsels in 2025. The event aimed to assess achievements, share insights, and outline future priorities for strengthening the Commission’s legal framework.
