During a hearing on “China’s increasing infiltration in Europe,” Congressman Jake Ellzey stressed the importance of Europe addressing not only the threat from Russia but also the persistent challenge posed by China’s pursuit of dominance. Lithuania’s vice foreign minister, Vidmantas Verbickas, shared his country’s experience of facing China’s pressure campaign. He mentioned Lithuania’s withdrawal from China’s “17 plus one format” in 2021 and the establishment of a Taiwanese Representative office in Vilnius. Verbickas highlighted China’s retaliatory actions, such as removing Lithuania from its customs systems, leading to a drastic decline in exports to China.
Senator Ruben Gallego expressed concerns about technology vulnerabilities, particularly in the realm of 5G infrastructure where Europe still relies on Chinese vendors. He warned about the potential risks associated with the future development of “six G” technology. Additionally, experts like Audrye Wong and Valbona Zeneli emphasized China’s strategic goals in Europe, aiming to acquire advanced technologies, shape global value chains, and exert influence in critical sectors.
