The World Health Assembly (WHA) has been used by China to influence the UN system and international legal order, as reported by the Foundation of Medical Professionals Alliance in Taiwan (MPAT). Taiwan has not been invited to the WHA for the 10th consecutive year, with its last participation as an observer in 2016.
Despite efforts to secure an invitation, Taiwan was once again denied participation in the WHA during the General Committee and Plenary Session. China and Pakistan advocated for Taiwan’s exclusion, while allies Palau and Paraguay supported Taiwan’s inclusion.
During discussions on Taiwan’s involvement in the WHA, China reiterated its “one China” principle, claiming Taiwan as part of China. MPAT highlighted that China misinterpreted UN Resolution 2758, which recognized the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government.
MPAT’s executive director criticized China for accusing Taiwan of disrupting the “status quo” while leveraging international platforms to escalate tensions. Palau and Paraguay emphasized Taiwan’s vital role in global health, warning that excluding Taiwan weakens disease surveillance and preparedness efforts.
