China’s Wang Xinyu was beaten by Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the WTA Italian Open. The match lasted 1 hour and 26 minutes, with Wang unable to advance to the last 32. Wang had a strong start, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening set by breaking serve and holding comfortably.
Eala, however, increased her attacking play from the fourth game onwards, causing Wang to make more unforced errors. Eala turned the set around, winning it 6-4 after reeling off four consecutive games. In the second set, Wang broke in the fifth game, but Eala responded with a break back and sealed the set 6-3 for a straight-sets victory.
After the match, Wang expressed regret over not handling key moments better, especially after her early lead in the first set. She acknowledged the need to play more aggressively during crucial moments. Eala’s next opponent in the third round will be either former champion Elena Rybakina or Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
