A Christian man, Zahid Masih, working as a bonded laborer and security guard in Punjab, Pakistan, was brutally attacked by a coworker, Muhammad Ali Azhar, on January 21. The attacker, after hurling derogatory comments at Masih, poured petrol on his face and set him on fire. Fortunately, timely intervention by the Christian community prevented further harm to Masih.
The Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM) reported that during the assault, Azhar targeted Masih’s Christian faith with hateful comments, emphasizing religious superiority. This incident has caused physical injuries and severe psychological trauma to Masih, alarming the Christian community in Pakistan.
The incident sheds light on the discrimination and violence faced by Christian laborers in Pakistan, who endure harassment and abuse due to their religious identity. The VOPM highlighted the vulnerability of religious minorities in labor-intensive sectors and called for stronger legal measures to protect them and combat intolerance in the country.
Human rights organizations have condemned the attack on Zahid Masih, advocating for institutional reforms to ensure justice for victims and reduce religious intolerance in Pakistan. Masih is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries, with a long road to psychological recovery ahead. The incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to safeguard vulnerable communities and uphold fundamental rights for all citizens, irrespective of their faith.
