A 22-year-old Christian motorcycle ride-hailing driver, Alyan Johnson, was critically injured after being shot nine times by a police anti-crime patrol in Pakistan’s Punjab province. The incident occurred in Rawalpindi on May 26 when officers opened fire on Johnson after a suspected armed man fired into the air and attempted to flee.
Johnson, who had been working as a driver for six months to support his family, is currently fighting for his life. His family has filed a complaint at Sadiqabad police station, demanding an impartial investigation, strict action against the responsible officers, and compensation for the injuries and losses incurred. Johnson’s uncle, Joseph Michael, emphasized the need for justice and imprisonment of the shooters who abused their authority.
Punjab Chief Minister’s inspection team chairman Raja Abdul Hanif visited Johnson in the hospital and assured the family of justice. The incident has raised concerns over police encounters in Punjab, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemning the Crime Control Department in the province for staged encounters leading to extrajudicial killings.
