Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for 20 days, was moved to a hospital on Saturday due to his deteriorating health. This action was taken following the directives of the Delhi High Court and based on medical advice. Police officers intervened at the protest site in the morning and transferred Wangchuk to the hospital amidst protests by members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The decision to shift Wangchuk to the hospital came ahead of a planned court hearing regarding his health condition. The High Court had previously ordered daily health assessments for Wangchuk, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding his life. Doctors had expressed concerns about organ failure and noted a significant decline in his health, with Wangchuk losing over eight kilograms since starting his fast.
Wangchuk initiated the hunger strike to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. The protest, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), also advocates for broader reforms in the education system. Various political figures, including Congress leader Pawan Khera and Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal, have visited Wangchuk at the protest site, urging him to end his fast due to his worsening health.
