Despite official warnings and bans, cockfights were organized on a large scale in various parts of Andhra Pradesh during the initial day of the three-day Sankranti festival. People engaged in betting using currency notes at these events held in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Special arenas for cockfights and related activities were set up in several districts, with politicians supporting the organizers.
Prominent figures from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and neighboring states, including politicians, businessmen, and celebrities, were among the hundreds of spectators and bettors at these events. The competitions, involving well-trained roosters with knives attached to their legs, attracted significant participation and are expected to continue for three days. Despite warnings, the organizers justified the cockfights as a traditional aspect of Sankranti festivities.
In response to the High Court’s directive to crack down on cockfighting, police and district authorities increased surveillance using drone cameras and warned of strict action against those involved. Organizers made elaborate arrangements, including generators, floodlights, special galleries, and digital screens to broadcast live rooster fights. Animal rights groups had urged the public to refrain from participating in such activities, emphasizing the legal prohibition on inciting animal fights.
