Crypto exchange Coinbase revealed on Tuesday that it is reducing its workforce by 14% due to the impact of artificial intelligence on work processes, aiming to become more efficient and AI-focused. Impacted employees will be notified via email and offered meetings with HR representatives and senior leaders for further details. The company’s CEO, Brian Armstrong, emphasized the necessity of this decision to safeguard customer data and adapt to market conditions.
Armstrong explained that the move is a proactive response to two key factors affecting the company. Firstly, despite being financially stable, Coinbase is adjusting its cost structure to navigate the current market downturn and emerge stronger. Secondly, the increasing role of AI in streamlining operations has prompted the need for a leaner and faster organizational setup. The company aims to leverage AI capabilities for enhanced productivity and innovation.
Acknowledging the transformative impact of AI on workflows, Armstrong highlighted the accelerated pace of development achievable with AI integration. Coinbase is proactively embracing this shift by reorganizing its operations to align with AI-driven efficiencies. The CEO stressed the importance of recapturing the agility and focus of a startup, with AI technologies at the core of the company’s future endeavors.
In response to the layoffs, US-based employees will receive a comprehensive severance package, including a minimum of 16 weeks of base pay, equity vesting, and extended health benefits. Additional support will be provided to employees on work visas and those outside the US, tailored to local regulations and circumstances.
