An intense cold wave persists in Jammu and Kashmir, with Srinagar city experiencing a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department forecasts no significant Western Disturbance impacting the region until January 20, indicating a low chance of substantial snowfall.
Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam recorded minimum temperatures of minus 4 degrees Celsius, minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, and minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Meanwhile, Jammu city saw a minimum temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius, with other areas like Katra, Batote, Banihal, and Bhaderwah also facing cold weather.
Despite the weak winter sun, water taps in Srinagar and surrounding areas froze in the morning, adding to the challenges faced by residents. The ongoing 40-day period of severe winter cold, starting from December 21, is expected to last until January 30, potentially delaying the season’s first snowfall until after January 20.
The locals are coping with the harsh conditions by donning the traditional ‘Pheran’ overgarment and layering up with woolen clothes for warmth. While the elderly wear woollen caps and mufflers, the youth are advised against vigorous physical activities to prevent fatal temperature shocks.
Doctors recommend staying indoors until 10 a.m., as mornings are the coldest during winter. The delayed snowfall post-January 30 may impact the water reservoirs in the mountains, crucial for sustaining water bodies in the region during the summer months.
