Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the Bharat Taxi driver onboarding initiative in Mumbai, focusing on enhancing urban mobility and improving driver livelihoods. The program saw participation from numerous auto-rickshaw and cab drivers, along with transport union representatives and cooperative association members.
Goyal highlighted the significance of cooperative and technology-driven models in fortifying India’s developing mobility ecosystem. He mentioned that Bharat Taxi allows drivers to engage as partners, leveraging digital tools to enhance transparency, earnings, and the dignity of labor.
The initiative, as per the Ministry of Cooperation, aims to broaden access to structured digital platforms that boost driver involvement, enhance transparency, and create better earning prospects. By streamlining onboarding processes and ensuring consistent access to ride demand, the initiative seeks to establish a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for both drivers and commuters.
Mumbai now joins a network of cities, including Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow, where organized mobility networks are progressively expanding. Vivek Pandey, COO of Bharat Taxi, expressed optimism about Mumbai’s potential market and the platform’s expansion plans, supported by local driver unions.
Recent operational data reveals the platform’s growth, engaging over 5.17 lakh drivers, onboarding more than 50 lakh customers, and facilitating nearly 10 lakh rides monthly across cities. The expansion aligns with the vision of Amit Shah, Minister for Home and Cooperation, to establish Bharat Taxi in all major Indian cities within the next three years, with Mumbai playing a pivotal role in this national growth strategy.
