Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the launch of unified payments interface (UPI) services in Greece, enabling eligible customers to transfer money instantly and securely while significantly reducing transaction costs. Goyal expressed that the growing global adoption of UPI demonstrates trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tech-driven solutions that foster cross-border value and partnerships for mutual growth.
During his visit to Greece, Goyal met with Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias to discuss enhancing the economic ties between India and Greece. He encouraged Greek businesses to invest in India and explored opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing and infrastructure development, aligning with the shared goal of progress and prosperity.
Witnessing a live demonstration of the Eurobank-NIPL partnership for UPI services at Eurobank headquarters in Athens, Goyal, alongside CEO Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait, marked a significant milestone in expanding India’s digital payment ecosystem globally. Additionally, he participated in the India-Greece Business Forum and engaged with the Indian diaspora community present at the event.
Goyal emphasized India’s robust economic growth, stable fundamentals, and continuous progress, offering promising prospects for Greece. He also highlighted the potential benefits of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement in unlocking new avenues for trade, investment, and economic cooperation. The Commerce Minister stressed the vast opportunities for collaboration across various sectors, urging businesses and investors to partner with India for enhanced investments, stronger ties, and shared prosperity.
