A complaint has been lodged with Kolkata Police against actors Parambrata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee, accusing them of provoking post-election violence in 2021 through a social media post. The complaint was filed by lawyer Joydeep Sen at Gariahat police station. The actors have not responded to the allegations as of now.
The controversy dates back five years when Parambrata and Swastika made comments on social media following the state Assembly elections. Parambrata reportedly made a contentious remark on social media on the day the 2021 election results were announced. Swastika supported his comment with a counter-statement. According to the complainant lawyer, these comments by the actors allegedly incited post-election violence and escalated tensions in the state.
Joydeep Sen claimed that a case has been registered against Parambrata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The lawyer accused the actors of instigating violence, including the murder of BJP workers, rape and molestation of BJP women workers, and violence by the Trinamool Congress in 2021. Allegedly, their influential status in society led many people to act on their comments, resulting in the harassment of BJP workers.
During a meeting at Technicians Studio, BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh disclosed that Parambrata had felt compelled to support the previous Trinamool Congress government due to pressure from Aroop Biswas and Swarup Biswas. Parambrata clarified that his actions were not driven by personal vendetta but by familial considerations. A video clip of his statement went viral on social media, drawing criticism for his swift change in stance. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged against him.
