The Congress criticized the Narendra Modi government for not acting on its requests to implement the women’s quota. They alleged that letters from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on the issue were disregarded until a recent attempt to delay it by adding a delimitation clause. Sonia Gandhi’s 2017 letter to PM Modi advocating for the Women’s Reservation Bill was highlighted by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh.
Ramesh emphasized that the Congress has consistently supported the women’s quota, blaming the Modi government for neglecting the demand and attempting to stall it by associating it with delimitation. To counter accusations against the Congress for the bill’s defeat in the Lok Sabha, Ramesh mentioned Rahul Gandhi’s 2018 letter urging PM Modi’s backing for the bill’s passage in the monsoon session.
Rahul Gandhi’s letter stressed the importance of women’s empowerment in public life and urged PM Modi’s support for the bill. The Congress collected over 3.2 million signatures in support of the bill, appealing to PM Modi to ensure its passage for increased female participation in elections. Ramesh criticized the Prime Minister for delaying the implementation by linking it to delimitation even after eight years.
