The Congress criticized the United States and Israel for their joint military strikes on Iran and called for the Indian government to step in and halt the conflict. Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, denounced the attack orchestrated by President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of Indians in the region. The tension escalated significantly in the Middle East as the US and Israel conducted precision airstrikes on suspected missile sites and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard locations.
The offensive, seen as a major confrontation in the region, was fueled by accusations of Iran’s involvement in regional destabilization and nuclear program advancements. While the US justified the strikes as a measure to counter Iran’s aggressive stance, Israel’s Prime Minister hailed it as crucial for regional security. Critics cautioned that the military action could trigger a broader conflict in the Middle East, with Iranian state media labeling it as an “act of war” and reports of retaliatory missile strikes on American bases in Gulf countries emerging.
The situation has raised global concerns about the possibility of a prolonged conflict with widespread repercussions. With a significant Indian expatriate community in the Middle East, including around 9 million individuals, India is closely monitoring the developments and preparing contingency plans to safeguard its citizens in Iran and neighboring Gulf states. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman host the largest numbers of Indian workers, primarily engaged in construction, services, and healthcare sectors.
