Congress has escalated its criticism towards the Madhya Pradesh government, accusing it of compromising the state’s interests in resolving issues related to the Sardar Sarovar Project. Senior Congress MLA Ajay Singh highlighted that despite the state bearing the brunt of submergence and displacement, it failed to secure its rightful dues. Singh urged Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to clarify why the state’s rights were allegedly sacrificed.
Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar also raised concerns about the settlement, urging the government to make the complete agreement public. Singhar emphasized that despite Madhya Pradesh facing the most significant impact from the project, it was now being asked to make payments under the settlement, demanding transparency and accountability from the government.
In response to the accusations, Cabinet Minister Chaitanya Kashyap defended the agreement, stating that it had successfully addressed longstanding inter-state issues, including those related to the Sardar Sarovar Project. Kashyap hailed the agreement as a milestone that would facilitate coordinated and accelerated development among the involved states. Under the terms, Gujarat will bear 75% of the project expenses, while Madhya Pradesh will provide Rs 217 crore to Gujarat.
The political controversy emerged following a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, attended by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and counterparts from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. The states collectively agreed to resolve various long-pending inter-state issues, including matters concerning the Sardar Sarovar Project. The state government emphasized that the agreement aims to settle disputes and enhance collaboration for faster development among the participating states.
