The Indian National Congress has initiated a countrywide movement against the G-RAM-G Act, also known as the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, alleging that it undermines the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). In Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, the District Congress Committee organized a symbolic one-day fasting protest at Ambedkar Chouraha to support MGNREGA.
Key Congress leaders like Ramkesh Meena and Indra Meena participated in the fasting program, showing solidarity with rural households reliant on MGNREGA for livelihood security. This protest in Sawai Madhopur is part of the 45-day “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” movement by Congress, involving various actions across states to pressure the government for MGNREGA’s restoration.
The Congress party is intensifying its efforts through district-level fasts, gram sabha resolutions, public meetings, and rallies to emphasize the importance of MGNREGA. Leaders have committed to escalating the agitation until the original MGNREGA provisions are reinstated and the G-RAM-G Act is withdrawn, citing concerns about dilution of rights-based guarantees.
Congress has accused the central government of attempting to weaken MGNREGA’s core principles through the G-RAM-G Act, impacting wage payment timelines, workdays, central funding, and the program’s legal entitlement status. This strategic move by Congress aims to address rural distress and elevate MGNREGA protection as a critical national issue in the upcoming months, reflecting the party’s dedication to combating rural poverty.
