Congress’ Karnataka unit President D.K. Shivakumar has been unanimously chosen as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in a meeting at the Vidhana Soudha. This move paves the way for him to potentially become the next Chief Minister of the state. The election, held in the presence of senior Congress leaders and legislators, saw outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposing Shivakumar’s name, which received unanimous support.
Announcing the decision, Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal, confirmed Shivakumar’s election as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party. The process began with Siddaramaiah proposing Shivakumar’s name, which was seconded by senior Congress leader G. Parameshwara and supported by all legislators present. The unanimous election of Shivakumar signifies the completion of the Congress’s leadership transition in Karnataka, setting the stage for a new government under his leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony for Shivakumar as the next Chief Minister is scheduled for June 3 at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan. The party has opted for a simple event to avoid inconveniencing the public, with plans to keep the ceremony modest. Supporters had initially intended to organize a large-scale mobilization but decided against it due to June 3 being a working day. The party has urged Congress workers and Shivakumar’s supporters not to travel to Bengaluru for the event to ensure minimal disruption to normal life.
