Congress leader Udit Raj criticized the BJP for allegedly undermining Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his party, Janata Dal (United), within the NDA alliance. Raj accused the BJP of intentionally diminishing JD(U)’s political influence over time, leading to a weakened position for the party in Bihar. Nitish Kumar recently filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, sparking discussions on the state’s political landscape.
Raj highlighted that despite JD(U) being the larger partner historically, recent elections saw the party being overshadowed by Chirag Paswan. He pointed out that JD(U) was made to contest on the same seats as Chirag Paswan, with the BJP fielding its candidates in those constituencies. This strategic move, according to Raj, marginalized JD(U) within the alliance, ultimately sidelining the party.
Following Nitish Kumar’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha, speculations arose regarding the future leadership dynamics in Bihar. Sources indicate that while the BJP has gained strength in the state, replacing Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister might not be straightforward due to the coalition government with JD(U). Unlike in other states, where the BJP replaced chief ministers after clear wins, Bihar’s unique political scenario necessitates careful consideration of JD(U)’s stance.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls, JD(U) had to relinquish its dominant role within the NDA alliance after a relatively weaker performance compared to the BJP. However, the party made a comeback in the subsequent Assembly elections, securing 85 seats, slightly fewer than the BJP’s 89 seats. Given this delicate balance of power, the BJP is expected to factor in JD(U)’s preferences while making significant political decisions in Bihar.
Nitish Kumar’s personal influence among specific voter segments, notably the Most Backward Classes and women, remains a crucial aspect of Bihar’s political landscape. His popular schemes like providing bicycles to schoolgirls and implementing prohibition have garnered substantial support, particularly among women voters. As discussions on Nitish Kumar’s political future and JD(U)’s standing within the NDA intensify, the Opposition accuses the BJP of gradually sidelining its longtime ally.
