The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has entrusted its Tamil Nadu unit with the decision of supporting C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the state’s next government. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal clarified that the electoral outcome in Tamil Nadu mandates a secular government dedicated to upholding the Constitution.
He emphasized the Congress’s stance against allowing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its affiliates to influence the state government’s formation or operations. Venugopal stated that the sentiments expressed through the election results will guide the final decision, with the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) authorized to make the call on Vijay’s appeal.
The emergence of TVK as the largest party in the fractured mandate of the recent Assembly elections has reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political scenario, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s popularity, especially among youth and urban voters, has positioned TVK as a key player post-election, prompting the party to seek alliances to secure the necessary support for government formation.
In reaching out to the Congress leadership, Vijay invoked the legacy of K. Kamaraj, emphasizing integrity, simplicity, and pro-people governance. The TNCC is expected to consult senior leaders and newly elected MLAs before making a decision. The Congress’s stance holds significance in determining whether TVK can gather adequate backing to claim power in Tamil Nadu.
