Congress Rajya Sabha MPs, Pramod Tiwari and Akhilesh Prasad, stated that the Congress is set to have a significant impact on the formation of the West Bengal government post-Assembly polls. The Congress is participating in the West Bengal elections independently, marking a departure from alliances over the past two decades.
In a strategic move, the Congress leadership is taking aim at both the Trinamool and the BJP in West Bengal. Tiwari and Singh highlighted that the Congress is emerging as a prominent third force in the state. They emphasized, “While the focus remains on the two major parties, the Congress is asserting itself as a crucial player and will have a decisive role in the near future.”
Discussing Bengal’s cultural and political history, Tiwari criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s handling of security in Delhi. He questioned the government’s failure to ensure security, pointing out the rise of syndicate culture, corruption, and political violence under the Trinamool regime. Akhilesh added, “The Congress is indispensable for the formation of the government in West Bengal, a state that has witnessed a decline in critical sectors like education, health, and industry.”
The Congress leaders’ statements precede Rahul Gandhi’s visit to West Bengal for election campaigning. Gandhi is scheduled for three consecutive meetings, starting in Serampore, Hooghly district, followed by a gathering at Shahid Minar in Kolkata, and concluding in the Metiaburuz area under the Kolkata Port Assembly constituency. The second phase of Assembly polls for the remaining 142 constituencies in West Bengal is slated for April 29, with the results expected on May 4 after thorough vote counting.
