With the Kerala Assembly election results looming, the Congress leadership plans to send high command observers to Thiruvananthapuram in case of a United Democratic Front (UDF) victory. This move aims to ensure a seamless transition of power and maintain internal unity by following established party procedures for selecting the Chief Minister.
Central observers, appointed by the Congress high command, will engage with newly elected legislators to reach a consensus decision and prevent public disagreements among potential Chief Minister candidates. The party has issued directives to quell speculation and internal debates regarding the leadership post, reflecting concerns about factionalism within the state unit.
The final decision on the Chief Minister will be made by the party leadership after consulting with MLAs, emphasizing that UDF allies will not influence the selection of the Congress legislature party leader. Senior Congress leaders emphasized a structured process, highlighting the importance of unanimity among elected representatives in the decision-making process.
The presence of central observers is seen as advantageous for senior leader K.C. Venugopal, the party’s General Secretary, Organisation, known for his influence within the party. While the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has backed Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheeshan, Congress leaders have underscored that leadership choices are internal matters, downplaying external endorsements.
Amidst social media campaigning by supporters of key leaders like Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala, and Satheeshan, the Congress aims to prevent leadership disputes and ensure stability if the UDF secures power. Venugopal’s grassroots connections and leadership experience from his days in the KSU and Youth Congress are highlighted as key strengths that could benefit the party in the upcoming decisions.
