Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge has asked party members for input on a potential protest against the termination of MGNREGA. He emphasized the need for early preparations for upcoming Assembly elections in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Bengal in April-May 2026. Kharge highlighted the importance of a nationwide movement, ‘MGNREGA Action Plan,’ to oppose the government’s decision to end the rural job scheme.
Expressing worry over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Kharge raised concerns about alleged collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. He urged vigilance to prevent the deletion of voters’ names from the rolls. Kharge recalled past instances where Congress members’ protests had influenced government decisions, citing the example of the land acquisition law amendment in January 2015.
At a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi, attended by prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, Kharge called for grassroots efforts to compile voter lists for the 2027 elections. He criticized the government for allegedly misusing investigative agencies to target opposition figures. Kharge also condemned reported attacks on Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh and highlighted efforts to disrupt communal harmony during Christmas.
