The Karnataka government’s proposal to include the traditional coastal sport Kambala in the renowned Mysuru Dasara festivities has stirred up a dispute, leading to a potential clash between the state administration and the Mysuru royal family. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar hinted at introducing new cultural events during the festival, but this move has faced opposition from the royal family, BJP leaders, and various civil society groups who argue that it could disrupt the unique customs of Mysuru Dasara.
Despite the prevailing drought conditions in the state, the government has declared that Nada Habba Dasara-2026 will be observed elaborately over an 11-day period. The proposed addition of Kambala, a traditional buffalo race from coastal Karnataka that gained popularity nationwide after the success of the film “Kantara Chapter – 1,” has been met with strong criticism.
Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, a member of the Mysuru royal family and a BJP MP, expressed his firm opposition to the idea during a high-power committee meeting. He emphasized the distinction between the cultural heritage of Dasara and the tradition of Kambala, stating that the people of Mysuru are against integrating Kambala into Dasara celebrations.
Former BJP MP Pratap Simha emphasized the importance of respecting the wishes of the royal family, underscoring that Dasara is a festival deeply rooted in tradition and culture. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar responded to queries regarding the proposed alterations for this year’s festival, mentioning that the government is evaluating various suggestions before making a final decision.
