One of the convicts who broke out of Kalaburagi Central Prison in Karnataka by scaling a 20-foot-high wall was caught after a police encounter. The escapee, Santhosh Basappa Metre, sustained a gunshot wound during the operation. Two police officers were also injured and are receiving medical treatment.
The incident has caused embarrassment to the state government, especially as Kalaburagi is the home district of the state’s Home Minister. The three convicts managed to escape by cutting the grill of their barrack and scaling the prison wall. CCTV footage captured them walking freely and later boarding a vehicle.
Police have registered a case and formed special teams to locate the remaining fugitives. The escapees, convicted in serious cases, are natives of Bidar district. Special teams from different districts are involved in the search operation.
Santhosh, convicted in a rape and POCSO case, had been serving a life sentence in the prison. He was apprehended after a tip-off and a confrontation with the police. The search for the other two escapees is ongoing, with alerts issued across districts.
Authorities are conducting intensive search operations to find the remaining convicts. The prison break has raised concerns about security measures and possible insider involvement. The incident is being treated as a major security lapse, and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the escape.
