Counting of postal votes has commenced in Kerala, with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) currently in the lead, closely followed by the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) opening its account in one seat.
The 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly elections’ counting started at 8 a.m. across 140 constituencies, beginning with postal ballots and then moving on to electronic voting machine votes around 8:30 a.m. Initial trends are expected to be clearer by 10 a.m. after firming up by 9 a.m.
Exit polls have suggested a shift in power towards the UDF, but the LDF is optimistic about securing a third consecutive term, emphasizing its welfare initiatives and governance track record. The NDA aims to enhance its vote share to potentially play a significant role in the tight competition.
The UDF has campaigned on an anti-incumbency platform, highlighting issues like price hikes, corruption accusations, and unemployment, targeting a seat tally of 80-90 despite internal leadership disputes. The LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is banking on its developmental and welfare agenda, showcasing infrastructure projects and social security programs, while facing concerns about voter fatigue in some areas.
