E-commerce company Coupang announced the recovery of leaked personal data of around 3,000 customers. The data breach was attributed to a former employee who accessed basic customer information from 33 million accounts using stolen security keys. However, data from only 3,000 accounts was saved and later deleted by the suspect.
Coupang clarified that no customer data was shared with third parties and emphasized that sensitive information like payment details and login credentials remained secure. The company also secured all devices used to access and store customer information, including a hard drive.
Following reports of the data breach, the government disputed Coupang’s statement, calling it a “unilateral claim.” The Ministry of Science and ICT mentioned that the results of the investigation by a private-public joint team were pending and not confirmed. The team was established to probe the breach that impacted 33.7 million Coupang users.
