A couple from Manipur’s Kangpokpi district was arrested by a joint team comprising the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Manipur Police. The arrest was made in connection with the abduction and killing of six Naga civilians. The operation, based on credible intelligence, led to the apprehension of the accused involved in the May 13 incident.
The arrested individuals, identified as Pradip and his wife Ayingbi, residents of Leilon Vaiphei village, underwent necessary search and seizure procedures. The bodies of the six Naga civilians were discovered on June 11 in a forested area, a month after their alleged abduction. The incident sparked protests and tensions between the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur.
Acknowledging the killings, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) expressed remorse and called for a fair investigation into the ethnic unrest. The council admitted to the “grave mistake” committed by members of the Kuki-Zo community. However, some Naga organizations deemed the apology insincere and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings.
Efforts by authorities and community leaders led to the release of hostages from both communities following the violent events of May 13. The remaining Kuki villagers were released on June 10, with the bodies of the six Naga hostages found the next day. The investigation into these incidents has been handed over to the NIA for a comprehensive probe.
