After the Communist Party of India (CPI) extended “unconditional support” to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), D. Raja, the CPI General Secretary, emphasized that Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar should not obstruct government formation in the state. The TVK, led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, sought support from CPI, CPI-M, and VCK due to falling short of a majority.
Raja confirmed that CPI responded positively to the request, with the Tamil Nadu unit aligning with the national leadership to support TVK. The CPI urged the Governor to invite the leader of the largest party to form the government, stressing the importance of following democratic norms.
The decision to support TVK was made in the interest of Tamil Nadu’s stability and to establish a secular government, as highlighted by Raja. Both CPI and CPI-M have two MLAs each, contributing to the evolving political landscape in the state.
Former Shiv Sena-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi raised concerns about potential horse-trading in Tamil Nadu, alleging that the Governor’s office is being misused. Chaturvedi emphasized the need to respect the people’s mandate that favored TVK as the largest party, amidst ongoing negotiations and alliances post the fractured mandate in the recent Assembly elections.
