Stung by the Left Democratic Front’s loss in Kerala after a decade in power, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is set to conduct a thorough review of the electoral setback. The party’s leadership acknowledged the seriousness of the defeat and emphasized the need for introspection.
Following a two-day meeting, CPI-M General Secretary M. A. Baby stated that the party had completed an initial assessment of the election results and would now delve deeper to understand the reasons behind the setback in Kerala. Despite the government’s developmental efforts, the party expressed deep concern over the scale of the loss.
The CPI-M plans to involve party members, supporters, and well-wishers in the review process to identify the factors contributing to the defeat. It aims to implement corrective measures and organizational reforms to enhance its political strength. Additionally, the party attributed part of the blame to external influences, alleging financial constraints imposed by the Union government during the Left Democratic Front’s tenure.
Accusing the BJP of misusing central agencies and the Election Commission for electoral advantage, the CPI-M criticized the irregularities in the electoral process in West Bengal. The party’s candid assessment reflects a realization of the significant setback faced by the CPI-M in Kerala, marking the absence of a CPI-M state government in the country for the first time in nearly six decades.
