As tensions rise in Bangladesh, pro-Awami League lawyers face accusations of obstruction and assault by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed lawyers during the Chattogram District Bar Association election nomination process. The incident occurred at the Bar Library entrance, where pro-Awami League lawyers, led by presidential candidate Abdur Rashid, were reportedly impeded by pro-BNP lawyers. The situation escalated as the Bar election commission closed the library doors, leading to a protest by the pro-Awami League lawyers on-site.
Amidst the turmoil, Fakhruddin Jabed, a contender for the general secretary post from the pro-Awami League panel, expressed frustration at being denied entry to collect nomination papers, stating similar challenges in past elections. The ban on Awami League activities further complicates the election environment, as noted by Kamrul Islam Chowdhury of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum’s Chattogram unit. The upcoming CDBA executive committee polls are slated for May 21 at the Bar Association auditorium.
The plight of pro-Awami League lawyers extends beyond Chattogram, with reports of similar incidents in Dhaka, Barishal, Manikganj, and Cumilla. The rejection of nomination papers by the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association for alleged Awami League affiliations has drawn international criticism. The pattern of discrimination against pro-Awami League lawyers in bar association elections based on political ideology raises concerns about the fairness of the electoral process.
