A cyber fraud incident in Bihar has raised alarms after fraudsters allegedly hacked the mobile number of Rana Randhir Singh, a BJP MLA from Madhuban in East Champaran. The hackers used the MLA’s number to send messages to contacts, requesting an online payment of Rs 28,000. Upon discovering the breach, Rana Randhir Singh promptly notified local authorities, including the police and Cyber Cell, who have initiated an investigation to track down the perpetrators.
The MLA also took to social media to warn the public about the fraudulent messages and advised against responding to any money requests purportedly sent from his number. Officials suspect that the fraudsters targeted the MLA’s contacts strategically to enhance the success rate of their scam. This incident underscores the increasing threat of cyber fraud and identity theft, prompting authorities to urge citizens to be vigilant and verify any urgent financial requests, even if they seem to be from familiar sources.
Earlier in April, the East Champaran police dismantled an international cyber fraud network operating under the Kalyanpur police station area, uncovering connections that span across borders. Four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the case. According to an official, the arrested suspects were part of a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate and received a 10% commission on defrauded amounts. They collaborated with cybercriminals, including operatives in Pakistan.
