Train operator KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated in an official release that the collision resulted in 14 fatalities and 84 injured individuals receiving medical care at various health facilities. The incident involved a commuter train on the Jakarta-Bekasi route colliding with a long-distance train operating between Jakarta and Surabaya.
An investigation into the collision is underway, led by the rail operator and the National Transportation Safety Committee, following the tragic incident that occurred at 8:50 p.m. local time on Monday. Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, highlighted the challenging rescue efforts to extract survivors from the wreckage, emphasizing the need for specialized personnel for the task.
Land transport accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, with a previous train collision in West Java province in 2024 resulting in four fatalities and numerous injuries.
