Delhi and several parts of North India are bracing for intense heat as temperatures are expected to increase by 3 to 5 degrees in the coming days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued a statement indicating the likelihood of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions in the plains of northwest India and central India throughout the week. Residents in these regions may not find relief from the scorching weather, as per the grim forecast by the MeT Department.
The impact of escalating temperatures is already noticeable in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), with mercury levels surpassing normal ranges. Safdarjung, the representative weather station for the city, recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday, slightly above the usual. The temperature is anticipated to steadily climb across various parts of North-West India, encompassing Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, throughout the week.
The IMD’s weather outlook for the upcoming week predicts a gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius in many areas of Northwest India until May 21, with no significant alterations expected from May 22-23. Rajasthan is likely to experience heat wave conditions from May 17 to May 23, while Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are forecasted to witness a temperature surge from May 18 to May 23. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to encounter a heatwave from May 17 to May 21.
During the next week, parts of Uttar Pradesh are set to endure moderate to severe heatwave conditions, while Telangana in the southern region will also face the heat’s impact. The IMD has also predicted moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorms in isolated areas of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and some parts of West India on May 17 and 18. Furthermore, states in the North-East, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are likely to experience rainfall on May 18 along with lightning and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall expected in Arunachal Pradesh around the same period.
