Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta welcomed 43 delegates from 18 countries to the Assembly complex, emphasizing the significance of legislative drafting in democratic governance. Gupta stressed that the precision of laws plays a crucial role in securing rights, ensuring accountability, and shaping citizens’ lives. The delegates, representing 8 nations including Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Kenya, are attending the 37th International Training Programme in Legislative Drafting organized by PRIDE, Lok Sabha Secretariat.
The Assembly Speaker highlighted the historical importance of the Assembly complex, which served as the seat of the Imperial Legislative Council and later the Central Legislative Assembly under the Government of India Act, 1919. He noted the election of Vitthalbhai Patel as the first Indian President of the Assembly in 1925, marking a significant step towards legislative autonomy during colonial rule. Gupta also mentioned the presence of national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi in the Assembly, underscoring its dual role as a governance center and a platform for democratic expression.
During the training program, the delegates visited the Assembly House and were shown a documentary on Vitthalbhai Patel. They were also briefed on the publication “Ek Shatabdi Yatra,” with a copy presented to the Director of PRIDE for the Lok Sabha Library. Gupta informed the delegates about the Assembly’s modern initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and sustainability. Notably, the Assembly now runs on solar energy and has adopted the National eVidhan Application for paperless proceedings, ensuring smoother legislative operations and improved accessibility.
